TIME RIDDIM produced by DIGITAL-B 1996
Time Overview
In the mid-1990s, reggae music was changing. Many artists and producers were looking for ways to mix classic roots sounds with new styles. The Time Riddim, released in 1996, is a good example of this cultural moment. The instrumental used strong percussion and deep bass, bringing back the spirit of roots reggae while sounding fresh and modern. Behind this project was the well-known producer DIGITAL-B. DIGITAL-B, led by Bobby Digital, was one of Jamaica’s most important labels in the 1990s. The studio was known for its clear production and for helping both new and established artists. DIGITAL-B worked with many big names in reggae and dancehall, and its influence can be heard on many classic tracks from that era. The Time Riddim brought together talented singers. A J Brown delivered “Father And Friend,” showing his smooth vocal style. Benji Mayaz, known for his soulful voice, performed “Time Alone.” Don Campbell, a British reggae singer famous for his song “The Storm Is Over,” contributed “Never Burn Your Bridges.” George Nooks, who had a hit in Jamaica with “God Is Standing By,” sang “So Lonely.” Morgan Heritage, a group that later won a Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album in 2016, added “New Time New Sign.” Each artist gave the riddim a unique touch, but the roots instrumental tied everything together. The Time Riddim is still remembered as one of the key reggae releases of 1996, linking classic reggae traditions with a new generation of voices.
