The Sea – Red String Riddim – Tru Thoughts Records

Tru Thoughts put out Red String Riddim in 2016 through The Sea, the London producer Corin Pennington, who has spent years chasing the grainy warmth of early roots and dub. The cut with Yaz Alexander and Benjamin Zephaniah, Pressure I, sets the tone straight away: one-drop rhythm, big bass pressure, and a vocal that moves between Yaz’s strong melodic lift and Zephaniah’s unmistakable dub-poet delivery. It feels rooted in the UK sound system tradition, but the arranging has enough live feel and vintage colour to keep it from sounding like a museum piece.

The guest list is smartly chosen. Yaz Alexander, the Birmingham singer with deep reggae and jazz credentials, brings muscle and clarity. Benjamin Zephaniah, the late Birmingham dub poet, adds weight and purpose with lines that sit right in his long line of socially conscious work. Jimmy Screech, better known from Ghost Writerz, gives Like Them A Don a sharper edge, while Ramon Judah’s roots MC style suits the meditative flow of Someday. Joe Burns and Mike Wiley widen the palette further, pushing the riddim into more chant-heavy and harmony-led territory.

What makes the release work is the way each voice reveals a different angle on the same rhythm. The instrumental and dub mixes underline the production, letting the drum and bass carry the conversation when the vocals step back. Red String Riddim is less about flash than atmosphere, and that steady, patient pulse is exactly why it lands.
