Ice Cube Riddim - Mista Wilks Productions

Mista Wilks Productions came out of the mid-2000s dancehall run with a rhythm that moved at serious pace, and Ice Cube fits right into that era’s taste for fast, sharply clipped juggling. Ernie Wilks is credited as the producer behind the label imprint, and the set was released in 2005, with a Greensleeves Rhythm Album issue tied to it later that same year. The rhythm’s speed gave singers and DJs little room to hide, which is part of why it caught attention.

Alaine’s You Should Be Mine gives the project its smoothest crossover edge, while Da’Ville’s Pray A Little Harder brings a more melodic, emotional turn. On the tougher side, Elephant Man’s Tek Time, Hawkeye’s Buss Blank, Future Troubles’ All About The Money, and Vybz Kartel’s New all ride the beat with the kind of direct, streetwise energy the rhythm was made for. Captain Barkey’s Ghetto Gal and Spragga Benz’s Backative Strong add veteran dancehall weight, and Wayne Marshall appears twice, with Marry Wanna and Marijuhana, underlining how open the rhythm was to different voices and angles.

What makes Ice Cube interesting is the contrast between the pace and the performances: the production is bright, urgent, and almost breathless, yet the artists still find room for hooks, patter, and sly one-liners. It is one of those juggling projects where the instrumental itself does a lot of the talking, pushing every cut to come in hard and land fast.
