The Rock Steady Riddim (2015) – Smart Kids Records

Smart Kids Records’ Rock Steady Riddim arrived in 2015 as a six-cut reggae juggling from the Portmore-based imprint overseen by Omar “Smartkid” Currie. The label’s own catalog places it in October 2015, and the project sits early in a run that would later include The Majestic Riddim and Set It Off Riddim. The name nods to Jamaica’s rocksteady era, but the arrangement is a modern roots-reggae sound rather than a museum piece, with a warm bassline, crisp drum pattern and a smooth, forward-moving groove designed to give each singer room to work.

Lutan Fyah’s “Spliff Tail” is the heavyweight cut here, which makes sense given his standing as one of Jamaica’s most consistent conscious voices. His delivery brings the kind of social-leaning, marijuana-friendly writing he’s long been known for. Turbulence follows with “Vampire Slayer, ” pushing a tougher militant edge, while Mizdee’s “I’m A Survivor” adds a newer voice with a survival theme that fits the riddim’s uplift. Navino’s “On My Way” gives the set a younger dancehall-country crossover energy, and Zamunda’s “Love Is The Answer” pulls the compilation back toward roots and affirmation. Influential’s “Do Good And Live” sits neatly in the conscious lane as well.

What makes the set work is the balance: no one cut crowds out the others, and the riddim has enough bounce to carry both veteran authority and emerging talent. It’s the sort of release that shows Smart Kids Records understood how to frame a straight-ahead reggae foundation without overcomplicating it.
