Taxi Riddim comes out of the long-running Sly and Robbie orbit at Taxi Records, the label the pair have used for decades to turn spare, bass-heavy ideas into durable reggae and dancehall frameworks. Orville “Rorey” Baker and K. Asonuma are also in the production mix, which fits the era when Taxi kept updating its old-school backbone for the mid-2000s dancehall crowd.
The set runs on a slow, pulsing groove with a deep bassline, clipped drums and enough open space for the voices to do the talking. It feels rooted in reggae, but the cutdowns and mic work push it toward soundsystem pressure rather than laid-back roots meditations. That tension is part of why the riddim kept moving: it can carry hard-talking dancehall, singjay swagger and smoother harmony work without losing its shape.
Buju Banton’s “Driver A” is the anchor point, and it is easy to hear why it travelled so far. Beenie Man’s “Mi Dis Mavado” brings sharper clash energy, while Bounty Killer’s “Yappin” keeps the warning-tone business alive. Beres Hammond and Buju Banton on “Mood To Kill A Sound” add a stronger melodic pull, and Capleton with Uplifter on “Be Like This” gives the rhythm a more militant edge. Chaka Demus and Pliers, Elephant Man, Junior Reid and Luciano each push a different side of the same groove, from flirtation to street talk to roots-minded vocals.
As a project, Taxi Riddim sits comfortably in the Taxi catalogue: lean, recognisable and built for replay in a dance. It is the kind of riddim that reminds you how much mileage Sly and Robbie could get out of one well-judged bassline.
