Taranchyla / Tell Me Riddim - Shines Records

Shines Records’ Taranchyla, also filed as the Tell Me Riddim, sits squarely in that late-’90s dancehall pocket where bright keyboard lines, a heavy low end and brisk, sound-system-ready pacing did the work before anyone even touched the mic. The riddim first surfaced in 1997, and the lineup reads like a snapshot of the era’s crossover moment, when established voices and rising street names could share the same juggling and each leave a different mark.

Beenie Man’s “Tell Me” gives the riddim one of its cleanest hooks, while General Degree’s “Superman” pushes the energy toward cheeky, dancefloor-minded bragging. Alley Cat’s “Cold Like Ice” brings a sharper, cooler edge, and Elephant Man with Harry Toddler turn “Badman Nuh Run Back Nuh” into a fast-talking anthem built for forward motion. General B’s “Who La La, ” Goofy’s “Gal A Wink We, ” Jigsy King’s “Rampie Rampie, ” Phantom’s “She Luv Me, ” Powerman’s “Move Out, ” Chuck Fenda’s “Cutlass, ” Delly Ranks’ “Pelpa, ” and Demo Delgado’s “Gal Dem Bebe” all fit the same lively frame, but with different shades of swagger, flirtation and streetwise chat.

What makes the set work is that Shines keeps the rhythm open enough for personality to carry the weight. It has the snap of classic juggling dancehall, with enough bounce for deejays to bark over and enough melody in the foundation to give the hooks room to stick. On a release this crowded, the strongest cuts are the ones that sound instantly memorable after one pass, and Beenie Man, General Degree and Elephant Man’s camp all hit that mark.
