    steps riddim - renaissance records

Steps Riddim came out in 2004 on Renaissance Records, the imprint run by Delano Thomas, Michael Jarrett and Andre Saunders, with Michael Jarrett and Craig Marsh credited on the riddim itself. It sits right in that fertile first-half-of-the-2000s dancehall moment when a sharp, spare groove could carry a whole juggling session and still leave room for artists to push their own style.

The beat has a clipped, stepping forward motion, with a lean bassline, crisp drums and enough space in the arrangement for the voicing to do the heavy lifting. It is not one of those overly busy 2004 rhythms; the strength is in the tension between the bare-bones production and the urgency of the deliveries. That gives Assassin’s “Idiot Thing, ” Bounty Killer’s “Killing A Killing” and Capleton’s “Or Wah” their bite, while Elephant Man’s “Pakistan” and “Seh Dem Bad” ride the cut with his usual animated, high-energy approach. Busy Signal’s “I Like To Say” and Cecile’s “High Fire” add a lighter, melodic contrast, and Frisco Kid’s “Revenge” keeps the hardcore edge in place.

The lineup also says a lot about where Renaissance was in 2004: able to pull together heavy hitters like Bounty Killer and Capleton, crossover names like Busy Signal and Cecile, and rising voices such as Bugle, Cezar and Bunji Garlin. Bunji’s “Raise Your Hand” and Bugle and Tarnado’s “Ladies Man” widen the riddim’s reach beyond straight Jamaican dancehall, while the instrumental version leaves the pattern clean enough to hear why the riddim travelled so well.
