Tunda Clap Riddim - Renaissance Records

Renaissance Records cut Tunda Clap in 2003, and the riddim sits right in that sharp early-2000s dancehall moment when claps, skeletal drums and heavy basslines were driving the soundclash circuit. The production is tied to Delano Thomas, Andre Saunders and Michael Jarrett, the same Renaissance team behind a run of music that later fed into Greensleeves Rhythm Album #48: Tunda Klap. That link matters, because this wasn’t just a one-off juggling piece; it was part of a producer catalogue that moved cleanly between street-level dancehall and international compilation exposure.

The rhythm itself has a dry, percussive snap, with a clipped bounce that gives the singers and deejays room to ride the pocket without overcrowding it. Instead of chasing lush instrumentation, it keeps the arrangement lean and punchy, which is why the vocal cuts land so well. Bling Dawg’s Must Be Crazy and Bounty Killer and Assassin’s Dem Ting Deh bring that terse, confident badman energy. Cecile’s Its On Tonight and Lady Saw’s Coming Over tilt the riddim toward direct, teasing female play, while Daville’s Gal You Ah Murder and Frisco Kid’s Show Me Yuh Company push the more melodic and radio-friendly side of the juggling. Elephant Man’s Dead Over It and Busy Signal’s pairing with Kenny on Shake It Fast add the kind of uptempo party charge that made this rhythm travel.

What gives Tunda Clap its staying power is the balance: militant enough for the dance, catchy enough for repeat spins, and versatile enough to carry both hardcore chat and sly lovers’ talk.
