Punjabi Riddim – African Love Records

Punjabi Riddim came out of that early-2000s dancehall moment when a one-riddim set could still feel properly packed, and African Love Records loaded this 2004 cut with a sharp mix of names. Alley Cat’s “Run Red, ” Anthony B’s “Bad Man, ” and the Buju Banton and Sizzla combination on “Black Woman” give it real pull, while Capleton with Christopher, Elephant Man and Pinchers, and Lady Saw keep the juggling moving from hard-edged slackness to grittier street talk. The title itself hints at a cross-cultural angle, but the music stays firmly in dancehall territory, with enough bounce for the selectors and enough muscle for the sound system. If there’s a tune that lingers, it’s the Buju-Sizzla pairing, which gives the riddim its most commanding moment.
