NEXT GEN RIDDIM produced by JAY CRAZIE RECORDS 2016
Jay Crazie Records kept Next Gen Riddim in that sharp mid-2010s dancehall pocket where raw talk and hooky delivery had room to run. The 2016 juggling pulls in 11 artists across 18 cuts, with clean and raw versions for several songs and an instrumental tucked at the end. Bramma comes in heavy on Mr Death, while Teflon Young King brings a darker, more disciplined energy on Mistake Badness. Masicka’s Win Now is the tune that feels most wired for movement, all clipped confidence and forward-driving threat.
The riddim has the kind of lean, digital pressure that suits a street-facing set: tight drums, a hard-edged bass line, and enough open space for each deejay to shape the pocket without crowding it. That makes the contrast between voices part of the appeal. Dan Strange’s Time Like These gives the project a more reflective tilt, while Maestro Don’s Great and 6 Degrees push a more playful, self-assured side. Dwayne Rose, Hydal, Likkle Dainjah, Spookie and Tivick fill out the juggling with different shades of badness talk, money talk and everyday survival talk.
Jay Crazie Records had already been moving through the dancehall riddim lane before this release, and Next Gen sits neatly in that run as a producer-led compilation with a clear sound and enough names to keep selectors interested. The instrumental closes the circle and underlines that this is a rhythm first, artist showcase second.
