Pretenders Riddim – Fme Recordings

FME Recordings lined up Pretenders Riddim in 2016 with Ricky Blaze at the helm, and the project sits in that sweet spot where polished Brooklyn-bred production meets Jamaican voices. Blaze had already built a reputation for sleek, crossover-minded dancehall work, and here he keeps the groove crisp and melodic rather than heavy and aggressive. The rhythm has a bright, mid-tempo bounce, with a clean drum pocket and a smooth, almost sing-song topline that leaves room for melody-heavy cuts to breathe.

The lineup is strong and well chosen. I Wayne’s title track is the anchor, and his stern, conscious delivery gives the riddim its name and its moral center. Morgan Heritage bring their trademark harmony work to “Jah Nah Sleep, ” turning the rhythm into a rootsy chant with real lift. Gyptian’s “Turn Me Up” adds a more romantic, easy-gliding touch, while Kranium’s “Hype” pulls the project toward modern dancehall cool, all swagger and sheen. Natural Black’s “Never Give Up” fits the set with the kind of steady, uplifting message he has long been known for.

What makes Pretenders Riddim work is the balance: conscious reggae singers, harmony-led veterans, and younger dancehall voices all riding the same frame without flattening it. It plays like a carefully weighted juggling, not just a stack of singles.
