Newstah Riddim – Phlatline Sound Productions

Chico’s “Don’t You” is the name that tends to linger on Newstah, but the whole 2007 Phlatline Sound selection has that lean, mid-2000s dancehall snap that kept the cuts moving without crowding the mix. Tilo “Toli” Seidel’s Phlatline setup here runs seven voiced tracks, with Black Kappa, Ill Inspecta, Rebellion The Recaller, Ryno and Sojah all taking a turn across the same tight framework. It’s the kind of riddim built on a clipped drum pattern, sturdy bassline and just enough space for the vocals to cut through cleanly, so the personalities on the mic do most of the work. “Party All Day” and “Outtadoor” sit nicely beside Chico’s turn, and the whole thing stays in that brisk, percussive pocket right through the bass-led bounce.
