Back in 2002, when dancehall was leaning hard into taut, stripped-down rhythms and sharp one-drop-to-steppers pressure, Size 8 Productions came through with the Mutton Snappa Riddim, a compact seven-artist set anchored by Cardiff Butt’s production work and a tight run of voices from Bounty Killer, General Degree, Chico, Professor Nuts, and Tanto Metro and Devonte. The selection has that early-2000s digital snap without sounding empty: the kick pattern keeps the pace brisk, the bass stays dry and insistent, and the voicings are cut close so every line lands. Bounty Killer’s “Wave Dem” gives the riddim its toughest edge, while General Degree’s “Man Shortage” and Professor Nuts’ “Fish An Festival” lean into the kind of cheeky, everyday patter that was thriving at the time.
