Quicksand Riddim – Size 8 Productions

Quicksand Riddim landed in 1999 from Size 8 Productions, the Cardiff Butt-run label better known in dancehall circles through Butt himself as General Degree. It sits in that late-90s stretch where the sound system era still ruled, but the arrangements were getting cleaner and more song-driven. The juggling is short and sharp, with six cuts and no wasted space.

The centerpiece is “Magnet” from Bounty Killer and Richie Stephens, a pairing that gives the rhythm both muscle and melody. Richie Stephens returns on “Gun A No Fun, ” bringing his smoother singjay touch to a track that still keeps enough grit for the dance. Chico’s “Gallivant” adds a lighter, flirtier note, while TOK’s “All I Really Want” brings the crew energy and harmony-driven bounce that helped make them such a reliable voice on late-90s dancehall. Chrissy D appears twice with “Here Comes The Rain Again” and the longer-titled “Here Comes The Rainall I Real Mix, ” giving the set one of its more melodic, emotionally charged corners.

What makes Quicksand click is the contrast between the vocal styles: Bounty’s commanding delivery, Richie’s polished tone, TOK’s group chemistry, and Chrissy D’s more romantic bend all sit over a rhythm that feels sturdy but not भारी.
