Money Machine Riddim landed in 2019 from Shab Don Records, the Kingston-based dancehall production outfit led by Linval “Shabba” Thompson Jr. and Carlos Clarke. By that point, Shab Don had already become one of the names driving the sharper trap-dancehall wave, and this project sits right in that lane: lean drums, heavy low-end, clipped melodies, and a cold, streetwise pulse that leaves plenty of room for raw, talkative voicing.
The lineup is built around artists who were very active in that era of dancehall: Blak Ryno, Chronic Law alongside UKNOWN GINGO, Deep Jahi, D’JUDGE, Jafrass, Jahvillani, Laden, Noah Powa, Shane E, Shane O, and Vershon. The songs circle the same money-and-status territory the riddim title promises, but each artist comes at it from a different angle. Chronic Law’s cut pushes the harder, darker edge of the project, while Vershon’s “Weh Yuh Think Bout Mi” and Shane O’s “Question” bring more of the melodic, impatient badman energy that helped define the label’s 2019 run.
What makes the riddim work is its pace and attitude. It moves fast enough for the deejays to ride the pocket without dragging, but the production still has enough space in the arrangement for each voice to cut through. The result is one of those dancehall juggling sets where the rhythm itself does a lot of the talking: blunt, digital, and built for the street, with the different deliveries giving the project its shape.
