MI KING RIDDIM produced by XTERMINATOR 1999
MI King Overview
In 1999, reggae fans heard a special sound called the MI King Riddim. This riddim carried the steady, gentle flow of rocksteady music into the new era. The man behind this project was the producer known as XTERMINATOR. XTERMINATOR, led by the influential Philip "Fatis" Burrell, was a key label in Jamaican music and helped shape the roots reggae revival in the 1990s. The label is famous for working with top reggae artists and creating music that still gets played on sound systems today. The recording process for MI King Riddim focused on live instruments and rich, warm tones. This gave the riddim a classic feel, while keeping it fresh for 1999’s reggae listeners. The sound was both romantic and rootsy, making it stand out among other riddims of the time. Three major artists added their own style to the project. Gregory Isaacs, known as the “Cool Ruler,” brought his smooth voice to the track “Joy.” Isaacs was already famous for hits like “Night Nurse” and his unique, laidback singing. Luciano, who sang “Free Up The Herbalist,” was recognized for his uplifting lyrics and had won the British MOBO Award for Best Reggae Act in 1996. Sizzla, with “Mi King,” added energy and passion, building on his reputation from albums like “Black Woman & Child.” Together, these artists kept the rocksteady flow alive in 1999’s reggae scene.
