Masterpiece Riddim – 40/40 Productions

Steven “Lenky” Marsden’s 40/40 Productions was already one of the key dancehall engines of the early 2000s when Masterpiece dropped in 2002, with Greensleeves issuing it as Rhythm Album #34. Lenky had just come off the Diwali wave, and Masterpiece kept that momentum going with a sharper, springier juggling that felt built for fast switching, big hooks and instant crowd response.

The riddim has a bright, bouncy swing to it, with the kind of clacking percussion and elastic bounce that lets voices cut through cleanly. Sean Paul’s Ever Blazin’ became the tune most closely tied to it, but the whole set moves through a strong cross-section of the era’s dancehall names. Beenie Man brings the sharp bragging energy on Ten Out Of Ten, Bounty Killer sounds menacing and clipped on Raging Storm, and Elephant Man’s Give Her It Good pushes the more frantic party side of the rhythm. Assassin, Bling Dawg, Buccaneer, Chico, Crissy D, Desperado, Danny English and Eggnog, Aisha and Alozade all help make the release feel like a real scene snapshot rather than a one-hit vehicle.

What makes Masterpiece matter is how it sits between the heavyweight crossover pressure of Diwali and the harder street pulse of the period around it. It has the same Lenky knack for making a rhythm feel both immediate and durable, and the best cuts on it still sound like tunes DJs could drop today without explanation.
