After the huge crossover buzz 40/40 Productions had already built in the early 2000s, Venus Riddim feels a little more laid-back and roots-leaning, with a clean one-drop pulse, cushioned bass and enough space for the singers to stretch out. Anthony Cruz’s “Nah Get Enough, ” Lutan Fyah’s title cut and Richie Stephens’ “So Much Better” sit nicely beside Lukie D and Voice Mail, while the mood stays warm rather than aggressive throughout. It’s the sort of riddim that lets the melodies do the heavy lifting, and Steven Lenky Marsden’s version closes it out with the same easy bounce that holds the whole set together.
