The Mad Indian riddim has that jagged, late-2000s dancehall pull: sparse enough to leave room for the DJs, but with a sharp bounce that keeps the tension up underneath the verses. Fat Eyes lined up a strong cross-section of the era here, with Aidonia’s “Give It Up, ” Assassin’s “It Hurt Dem, ” Elephant Man’s “Roll Out, ” and Vybz Kartel’s “Dutty Wine” all cutting from different angles, while Lady Saw’s two versions of “You Have It” nod to the kind of female-forward energy Fat Eyes knew how to place in a juggling. The tracklist leans heavily toward straight bashment, though Wayne Wonder and Texture’s “Ready Fi Dem” adds a smoother, more melodic edge in the middle of the pressure. But it’s Kartel’s “Dutty Wine” that really locks the riddim in memory, the sort of cut that can hang over the whole project once it lands.
