Frenz List Riddim – Equiknoxx Music

Equiknoxx’s Frenz List Riddim arrives as a sharp 2014 dancehall juggling from the Kingston production house that was already earning a reputation for restless, off-kilter ideas. The label name on the release is Equiknoxx Music, the same imprint tied to Gavin “Gavsborg” Blair, Nicholas “Bobby Blackbird” Deane and the wider Equiknoxx circle, a crew known for turning straight dancehall frameworks into something more elastic and strange.

The riddim has a taut, forward-driving feel, with a skeletal bass line, clipped percussion and bright, synthetic accents that leave plenty of open space for the voicings. It plays like a modern dancehall cut designed for selectors, but the arrangement has a sly twist to it, balancing street-level energy with a slightly odd, almost playful edge that became part of Equiknoxx’s signature.

The lineup is strong without being overcrowded: Reosoul opens with “Frenz, ” Masicka follows with “Frenz List, ” Navino brings “Jenny Jenny, ” Busy Signal rides “Tamara, ” Christopher Martin handles “Kenya, ” and T. O. K. close with “Oh My, ” before Equiknoxx drop the instrumental. Busy Signal was already one of dancehall’s most adaptable voices by then, Christopher Martin brought his smooth, melodic style, T. O. K. supplied veteran group chemistry, while Masicka was still in the rise and already showing the sharp phrasing that would make him a name to watch.

What makes the release click is the way those different personalities sit on the same rhythm. Masicka’s cut feels especially pointed, Busy Signal’s melody softens the edges, and T. O. K. injects veteran bounce. It is a clean snapshot of Equiknoxx in 2014: inventive, danceable and willing to bend the rules without losing the dance.
