Eighty Five Riddim – Madhouse Records

By 2005, Madhouse Records was deep into its run of sharp, digital dancehall instrumentals, and Eighty Five fits right into that catalogue with its cold, clipped pulse and lean keyboard figure. The riddim is best remembered through Baby Cham’s “Ghetto Story, ” which turns the beat into something darker and more melodic, but Assassin’s “Anywhere We Go” keeps the tune in tougher street mode, all bite and forward motion. Spice adds another angle with “Grab Yu Hood” and “Fight Over Man, ” bringing a flirtier edge without softening the rhythm’s rough chassis, while Yellowman’s “Orphan” gives the set a veteran voice that grounds it. Produced by Dave Kelly’s Madhouse, this one arrived just as the riddim was spreading beyond dancehall’s core and into the wider crossover moment of the mid-2000s.
