DJ SPOOKY: RIDDIM COME FORWARD – TROJAN RECORDS 2006
DJ Spooky: Overview
In 2006, reggae riddim culture was alive and strong. Sound systems, with their deep bass and heavy drums, were at the heart of the scene. DJs and selectors would play exclusive versions, keeping crowds moving and the dancefloor full. This roots project brought together classic artists and songs, each with a special place in reggae history. The foundation of this release was built on the riddim, the instrumental track that sound systems love to version. DJ Spooky played a key role, bringing his unique touch with “DJ Spooky — Riddim Come Forward.” The project paid respect to the roots, using rhythms that echoed through Jamaican dancehalls for decades. Althea & Donna’s “Uptown Top Ranking” was a highlight. This song topped the UK Singles Chart in 1978, making the duo famous worldwide. Boy Friday’s “Version Girl” added soulful vocals over a lively beat. Byron Lee & The Dragonaires, known for spreading ska and reggae internationally, contributed “Napoleon Solo,” a tune full of energy. Dennis Alcapone, a pioneer DJ, brought “Dj's Choice,” showing his classic toasting style. Desmond Dekker & The Aces, famous for “Israelites,” offered “I Got The Blues,” blending harmony and roots flavor. Each track reflected the sound system tradition—music built for dancing, sharing, and community. This 2006 release celebrated reggae’s deep roots and its ongoing power in sound system culture.
