    Bellyas Riddim - Mentally Disturbed

Bellyas came out in 2000 from the Ward 21 circle under the Mentally Disturbed label, and it arrived right as that crew was helping push a harder, more percussive strain of dancehall into the new decade. The rhythm has a clipped, restless pulse, with the kind of stark drum programming and bass pressure that leaves room for the DJs to cut through clean. It feels built for juggling: sharp enough for sound system work, but spacious enough for personality and flow to do the damage.

The strongest pull here comes from the names that defined the period. Capleton’s “Who Dem? ” brings his fierce, militant delivery to the riddim’s tense framework, while Beenie Man turns in two different angles, pairing the cheeky “Fire Burn” energy with the more measured “Heights Of Great Men. ” Elephant Man adds the crowd-moving force he was already known for, and that energy shows up clearly on “Ghetto Youths” and “Watchie Pum. ” Bushman and I Lue’s “Live Up” brings a more uplifted tone into the mix, while Admiral Bailey’s “Bashy Bashy” links the riddim back to an older dancehall generation. Alozade, Frisco Kid, Goofy and Hawkeye fill out the set with the kind of streetwise, quick-tongued performances that suit the rhythm’s raw edge.

What made Bellyas matter is that it did more than gather names. It helped establish Ward 21 as a serious production force and later became the first Greensleeves Rhythm Album, which says plenty about how quickly the tune caught on in the scene.
