Belly Skin Riddim – G String

Belly Skin arrived in 2002 as a Greensleeves Rhythm Album built from G String Productions, the same camp that later went on to launch Lady G’s G-String Music imprint. It sits squarely in that early-2000s dancehall moment when a plain, punchy riddim could carry a whole stack of singles, and this one was given a full 24-cut treatment on the Greensleeves release. The lineup confirms how widely the rhythm travelled across the era: Capleton, Anthony B, Sizzla, Tanya Stephens, Tony Rebel, Ce’Cile, Hawkeye, Lady G, Wickerman, Alozade, Captain Barkey, Danny English and Egg Nog all voiced versions on it.

The rhythm itself is built for the dance, with a steady one-drop pulse and a lean, nagging pattern that leaves room for the singers and deejays to work the pocket. That restraint is part of the appeal. Capleton’s “Boom” pushes the militant side of the riddim, while Anthony B’s “Girl Idiot” and Tanya Stephens’ “Mi Want U” pull it into slyer, more conversational territory. Ce’Cile’s “Cash And Carry” and Lady G’s “Nah Play 2nd” bring the female perspective into a space still dominated by male voices, and Sizzla’s pair of cuts underline how adaptable the track was for different moods.

Belly Skin is less about a flashy hook than about tuning a groove for juggling. It is the kind of riddim that worked because the parts were simple, sharp, and easy to carry from one artist to the next.
