By 2005, roots reggae was still leaning hard on heavyweight one-riddim sets, and Beaten fits right into that moment with a militant, consciousness-driven lineup fronted by Capleton and Junior Reid’s “Forgive Them” and the Buju Banton/Peter Tosh pairing on “Must Get A Beaten. ” Rocky Gibbs, whose real name is Carl Gibson, also cuts his own version on the riddim, and the project keeps its focus on voices that can ride a stern groove without softening it up. Luciano, Queen Ifrica, Tony Rebel and Admiral Tibet each bring a different shade of resistance, while the sequence moves from duet cuts into solo reflections and closes with the producer version, which feels like a deliberate way of letting the singers set the tone before the instrumental answer arrives.
