Bad Kalic Riddim - Stone Love

Bad Kalic came out in 2002 under the Stone Love banner, the same sound-system camp built by Winston “Wee Pow” Powell in Kingston and long respected for translating dancehall energy into clean, heavy production. As a Greensleeves Rhythm Album release, it sits in that early-2000s run where the one-riddim format was still a major way to frame the scene. The cut list shows a strong cross-section of the moment, with Beenie Man and Ce’Cile, Buju Banton, Capleton, Elephant Man, Alozade, Bling Dawg, Blingz, Frisco Kid and Kiprich all taking a turn on the rhythm.

The track that gives the set its sharpest commercial edge is Beenie Man and Ce’Cile’s No Loving, which rides the rhythm with a cheeky lovers-dancehall balance rather than full gunman pressure. Buju Banton’s Tournament brings his deeper, more commanding delivery to the riddim, while Capleton’s Wi Nuh Tek Dis pushes the militant side of the project into firmer territory. Elephant Man’s Shizzle My Nizzle is the noisiest cut here, all rapid-fire chatter and catchphrase energy, and the fact that it appears in both radio and raw forms says plenty about how the tune was meant to travel.

The rhythm itself has that taut, early-2000s dancehall snap: a dark bounce, enough space for both melody and confrontation, and the kind of pulse that lets a selector move quickly from one tune to the next. That flexibility is what makes Bad Kalic feel like a proper Stone Love juggling rather than just a stack of singles.
