Atmosphere Riddim (2007) – Don Corleon Records

If Don Corleon’s name usually brings to mind clean, glossy juggling, Atmosphere leans a little tougher and more stripped back, with the rhythm doing its work through a tight, thumping bassline and clipped, springy drum programming. The 2008 release keeps the cast compact, pairing Assassin’s sharp “Easy Fi Dun Dem” with Sean Paul’s slick “Private Party” and Vybz Kartel’s “Wine It, ” while Don Corleon himself fronts the instrumental cut. The sequencing makes sense: Assassin comes in with the hardest edge, Sean Paul smooths the momentum, and Kartel rides the riddim with that sly, elastic phrasing he was using so well in that period. It’s a mid-tempo dancehall piece, built for forward motion rather than drama, and the whole thing hangs on that rubbery bass pulse and the clean, stop-start groove.
