The Morning After Riddim (2021) – Captain John Music

Out of Saint Vincent, Captain John’s Morning After Riddim caught the carnival-season mood with a small but sharp three-song run that leans on live-feeling brass, guitar and percussion rather than the usual synthetic rush. L Pank’s “Whole Night” keeps the groove light and loose, while V’ghn turns “Trouble in the Morning” into the kind of after-hours story line Soca loves, and Skinny Fabulous links up with Holla Bak on “Attitude” for the set’s punchiest moment. That mix of vintage brass and modern groove makes the riddim feel rooted in the islands but ready for the road, and it was the kind of tune-up that traveled well through Grenada and St. Vincent carnival season, right down to the closing horn stabs.
