Natural Black was born Mortimer Softley on the 16th of March 1975 in Georgetown Guyana a. He moved to Jamaica in 1995 to pursue his career as a reggae singer and this was after he had served the army for a while. Upon his arrival in Jamaica, he worked as a welder and coffee picker while recording music in his spare time for different producers. He voiced for the likes of Anthony Red Rose, Gordon Lee, Jack Scorpio, Freddie Mcgregor, and Beres Hammond.

Softley met Roger Grant in 2000 after he had started his label ‘Organic Records’ and their meeting resulted in 2 singles namely ‘With Feeling’ and ‘Bad Mind’. Grant became his manager and he booked him on major shows such as Sting, Reggae Sumfest, and Rebel Salute He began touring places like France, Switzerland, Sweden, and many other territories and this made him known all over the world. Around this period, he released his first album titled ‘Spiritual Food on French Label Patate and this was followed by ‘World War’ which was on Lioroots. In 2006 he released the chart-topping ‘Far From Reality’ under the producer Don Corleon. Over the years he has recorded with producers such as King Jammy, 5th Element, Rootsdown Addis, Firehouse, Harmony House, Lion Paw, and many others and he has continued touring in many countries.
