Advocate Riddim (2008) – Big Ship

Big Ship had this one moving in 2008 with a taut, hard-edged dancehall riddim that left plenty of room for artists to come at it from different angles. The lineup tilts toward war talk and sharp-tongued street business, with Aidonia on “Tell Dem, ” Anthony B’s “Funeral, ” Busy Signal’s “Treaty Put Off, ” and Mavado’s “Money” all pushing the mood in different directions without breaking the tension. Chino, Elephant Man, Spragga Benz, and Teflon keep the energy up, but the cut that really lingers is Mavado’s take, which rides the pattern with that cold, clipped authority he had in the late 2000s.
