Donovan Germain’s Penthouse was already one of the sharpest names in Jamaican dancehall by the late ’90s, and Up Close And Personal sits right in that sweet spot where the label’s polish met the raw edge of the era. The riddim dates to 1998, and it has that clean, midtempo pull Penthouse was known for: taut drums, a sleek bassline, and enough space for the vocals to cut through without the arrangement sounding bare.

The biggest names on the juggling tell the story of the period. Buju Banton’s title cut is the anchor, and Beenie Man’s “Who Yuh Gonna Dis” brings the snarl and streetwise confidence that made him such a force in 1998. Sean Paul’s early “Nah Get No Bligh” is an important one too, catching him before the crossover years but already showing the clipped delivery and easy hook sense that would soon take him further. Mr. Vegas, Alley Cat, Hawkeye, General Degree, Richie Stephens, Little Kirk, Pinchers, and Tanto Metro and Devonte all add different shades, from rough talk to smoother, more melodic phrasing.

What makes the riddim last is how balanced it feels. It can carry Buju’s command, Beenie’s swagger, and the brighter singjay energy of cuts like “Everyone Falls In Love Sometimes” without losing its shape. That range is a big part of Penthouse’s late-’90s appeal: heavy enough for the dance, polished enough for replay, and packed with voices that helped define the era.
