Bruk Out Riddim (1998) – Xtra Large

Xtra Large’s Bruk Out Riddim landed in 1998 with that late-90s Kingston pressure Dave Kelly was making his name on: sharp, metallic, quick on its feet, and built for the dance. Xtra Large sat in Kelly’s Madhouse orbit, and this one arrived in the same run that pushed his production style across dancehall’s biggest names.

The juggling drew heavyweight voicings from Bounty Killer, Elephant Man, Lady Saw, Mad Cobra, Mr. Easy, Baby Cham, Goofy, Frisco Kid, Scare Dem Crew, and T. O. K. , with Wayne Wonder also tied to the riddim in that period. Bounty Killer’s “Anytime” and “Can’t Believe My Eyes” set the tone with his cold-blooded authority and easy menace. Elephant Man’s “We Fault” and “Ah Mi No We Fault” bring the manic, crowd-moving energy that would soon become his trademark. Baby Cham’s “Boom” and “Can I Get A Fuck You” add raw, cheeky heat, while Lady Saw’s “Yeah” keeps the riddim’s sexual swagger front and center. Mad Cobra’s “War” and Mr. Easy’s “Murder” sharpen the harder edge.

What makes Bruk Out click is the way the rhythm leaves space for each deejay to cut through without losing momentum. It is rugged but playful, with enough bounce for the dancefloor and enough grit for sound system pull-up business.
