Trippin Riddim – Itation Records

Itation Records’ Trippin Riddim arrived in 2012 as another chapter from the California-based sound and label that grew out of a sound system launched in 1998 before turning to record production in 2007. By the time of this release, Itation had already developed a reputation for modern roots projects with a West Coast connection and a strong ear for conscious singers. The set fits that lane, with a live-feeling one-drop pulse, warm bass, clipped guitar skanks and a bright, rolling groove that leaves space for melody rather than crowding the vocal.

Luciano’s “See the Light” is one of the key cuts, and his voice sits beautifully in the pocket as he pushes the spiritual message forward. Winstrong’s title tune gives the riddim its own identity, while Turbulence and Ras Attitude both bring the kind of uplifted, militant writing that this rhythm encourages. Sizzla and Messanjah Selah’s “We Overcome” adds extra weight, pairing two voices that can turn a chorus into a rallying cry. Fantan Mojah’s “Rastafari Bless” and Delly Ranx’s “Chant Me a Chant” show the range of the juggling, moving from chant-style delivery to sharper deejay phrasing without breaking the mood.

The lineup also includes Bobby Hustle, Kali Blaxx, Ishi Dube, Jah Sun with Stevie Culture, and Ras Indio, which gives the project a broad roots profile across Jamaica, the U. S. and the wider diaspora. Trippin Riddim feels like a steady, well-voiced modern roots set with enough variation to keep each cut distinct while holding one clear atmosphere together.
