Moving Riddim - Di Genius Records

Di Genius Records’ Moving Riddim arrived in 2012 as a roots-leaning reggae juggling that still carried enough contemporary polish to sit comfortably beside the bigger Jamaican radio sound of the period. Stephen “Di Genius” McGregor was already one of the scene’s most dependable hitmakers by then, known for moving easily between dancehall pressure and smoother reggae production, and this one finds him in a more restrained mode. The rhythm has a steady pulse, warm bass weight, clean drums and an easy forward motion that leaves space for the singers rather than crowding them.

Jah Cure opens it in fine form on “How Can I Forget, ” bringing that wounded, romantic tone that has long made him such a strong fit for lovers’ reggae. Anthony B follows with “Give Praises, ” grounding the riddim in uplift and spiritual reflection, while Marcia Griffiths adds veteran class on “No No No, ” her voice giving the tracklist a deeper roots-and-soul feel. Freddie McGregor’s “Be Alright” and Lutan Fyah’s “Hold A Medz” both sit naturally in that conscious lane, with the latter bringing a firmer edge.

The set also has a lighter modern crossover side through J Boog’s “Change Up Your Evil Ways” and Christopher Martin’s “What Can I Do (Without A Woman), ” both of which ride the rhythm with a smoother, more melodic touch. Chino’s “Boom Draw” and its clean radio version helped give the riddim a stronger street presence, while Di Genius’ own “Need My Love” ties the whole package back to the producer’s hand. With Black Am I’s “Common Sense” and Easy’s “Moving” filling out the spread, this is a tidy 2012 reggae compilation with enough vocal variety to keep the groove alive.
