The Return Riddim (2012) – Juke Boxx Productions

Juke Boxx Productions is the label behind The Return Riddim, and the project sits right in the company’s lane: slick modern Jamaican production with enough roots seasoning to keep the lovers and culture cuts moving. Shane Brown’s outfit had already built a reputation for clean, radio-ready juggling work and for placing some of the era’s biggest voices on the same rhythm bed.

The Return came out in 2012 and features Assassin, Busy Signal, Exco Levi, Morgan Heritage, Romain Virgo, Sherieta and Yami Bolo. The rhythm has a steady one-drop pulse with a polished digital finish, bright guitar skanks and a warm, full bass line that leaves room for melody. It feels more roots conscious than hard dancehall, but it still has the crisp momentum that keeps it workable in a juggling setting.

Morgan Heritage’s title cut gives the riddim its anchor, with the group’s harmonies turning the arrangement into a statement piece. Busy Signal’s Survival pushes the same foundation in a more direct, gritty direction, while Assassin’s Signs Of The Time brings sharper edge and social commentary. Exco Levi’s Cyaah Cow Wi Down and Yami Bolo’s Crush The Devil keep the spiritual and cultural tone intact, and Romain Virgo’s Nah Figet adds the smooth, youthful vocal contrast that Juke Boxx has often handled well. Sherieta’s Shot rounds things out with a female voice in a field that too often skews male, giving the riddim a little extra balance.

What makes the set work is the range: roots singers, a crossover star, a deejay and harmony acts all riding the same frame without flattening its character.
