THE PRESIDENT RIDDIM was produced by A. Cameron and mixed and mastered by Collin “Bulby” York at 321 Strong & Mixing Lab Recording Studios for RAGGEDY JOE RECORDS 1998.
Raggedy Joe’s The President Riddim lands in that late-’90s Dancehall pocket where tough digital swing meets polished studio finish. The riddim is credited to Anthony Cameron, better known as Anthony Red Rose, with mixing and mastering by Bulby York at 321 Strong and Mixing Lab. Red Rose had already built Raggedy Joe as his own Kingston imprint, after years as both singer and producer, and the label was active from the late ’90s with a run of roots-leaning and dancehall singles that sat comfortably beside the era’s biggest sounds.
What makes The President Riddim work is the mix of streetwise energy and melody. It has a clipped, forward-driving bounce rather than a dusty old-school feel, which gives room for both deejays and singers to land. Bounty Killer, Anthony Red Rose and Harry Toddler set the tone on “Not My Type” with a hard-edged trio cut, while Buccaneer’s “One Way Out” pushes the slackness and command he was known for at the time. Frisco Kid’s “Shame Tree Dead” and Hawkeye’s “Hot Gal” bring the sharper dancehall chatter, while Lukie D’s “My Way” and Terry Linen with Silver Cat on “Who A Di President” open the riddim up with more melody. Ninja Ford’s “Too Much Fire” and Zebra’s “Jah Rule Di Nation” keep the pressure on, giving the project a proper juggling feel.
It’s one of those Raggedy Joe releases that captures a very specific 1998-99 dancehall moment: competitive, cleanly mixed, and built for sound system rotation rather than album polish.
