The Downtown Riddim landed in November 2012 from Montreal’s Riddim Wise, a crew that was already pairing production work with label activity and a long-running sound system presence. It is a roots-heavy juggling with a modern edge, and the title nods to downtown Kingston while the cast stretches far beyond Jamaica. The project also includes a dub version, which helps underline how much care went into the arrangement and mix.

The strongest cuts come from the veteran names. Lutan Fyah’s “Bossman” brings that steadfast conscious tone he has made his own, while Sizzla Kalonji’s “Take Me” adds urgency and heat without breaking the riddim’s steady pulse. Turbulence and I-Shenko’s “Obeah Man” gives the set one of its darker, more mystical turns, and Mikey General’s “Promise” adds a smoother, uplifted chant that sits well inside the same framework. On the Canadian side, Mikey Dangerous on “Higher Than High, ” Face T with “Talk Of The Town, ” Marky Lyrical on “Valley Of Darkness, ” King Shadrock with “Nuh Mek We Go Fa, ” and Dan Fiyah Beats on both “Papa Use To Tell Me” and “Cyaan Hide It” help widen the palette without losing the reggae core.

What makes the release interesting is the range: Jamaican Patois, English, French, Sranan Tong and Lingala all appear across the project, with Awadi and Tibass Kazematik pushing it into a broader African conversation on “S. O. S. Congo. ” The riddim itself has a clean, rootsy stride, firm bass weight, and enough room in the rhythm section for the voices to carry the message.
