Mixpak’s early Skull Riddim sounds a bit leaner and more militant than the label’s later, more wide-open jugglings, and that suits the 2009 release well. Dre Skull’s production is all timpani rolls, sharp strings and a hard 120bpm pulse, giving the riddim a tense, almost cinematic bounce that leaves plenty of room for the voices to cut through. Sizzla’s turn on “Gone Too Far” feels like the centrepiece, with Vybz Kartel’s dub closing things out in a way that underlines how the instrumental can carry its own weight. Crossovah, Lyrical, Natalie Storm and Shifta all slide into that cold, propulsive pocket, but it’s the bare “Version” and Kartel dub that really nail the project’s grimy, drum-led mood.
