Dre Skull’s Blacklight Riddim arrived in May 2015 as a Mixpak release that sits right in the label’s Brooklyn-to-Kingston lane. Mixpak was founded by Dre Skull in 2009, and by this point the imprint had already made dancehall one of its signatures. Blacklight Riddim runs at 109 BPM and was recorded in Kingston before being mixed in Mixpak’s Brooklyn studios by Suku of Ward 21, which gives the whole set that clean cross-Atlantic bounce the label has been chasing for years.
The instrumental pulls from dembow pressure but dresses it in ravey synth flashes and a sharp, springy kick-snare pattern. It feels bright, forward-moving and built for pull-ups, with enough space for each vocalist to land a different angle on the same rhythm. QQ opens with “Next One, ” all youthful gallis energy and slick phrasing. Spice turns “Hold Tight” into a blunt, sensual anthem, which is exactly the lane she has owned for years. Tifa’s “Rock My Body” brings a hard, flirty charge, while Konshens’ “Gal Ting” adds his usual wining-song ease and modern dancehall polish.
What makes Blacklight Riddim click is how focused the voicings are: four artists, each with a distinct voice, each leaning into the same high-tempo energy in a different way. It is a compact snapshot of mid-2010s dancehall, where Jamaican radio muscle, club-ready production and label-driven curation all met in one tight package.
