Renegade Riddim (2001) – Fat Eyes Records

Renegade Riddim comes out of the Fat Eyes camp, the Bulby York and Fatta Marshall production team that helped define late-’90s and early-2000s dancehall with a steady run of sharp, radio-ready juggling projects. By 2001, Fat Eyes had already become a familiar name for tough, melody-driven rhythms and a roster that could jump from hardcore DJ cuts to more reflective singers without breaking the mood.

This one rides with a lean, forward-driving pulse and a bright digital edge, the kind of riddim that leaves space for the voice to do the heavy lifting. The energy is streetwise rather than glossy, with enough bounce for the selectors and enough bite for the dancers. Capleton’s “How It A Go” brings the most pressure, all stern delivery and conscious-fire authority, while Elephant Man’s “Look” pushes the rhythm into pure dancehall rally mode. Anthony B’s “Jiggalo” sits in that sweet spot between grit and hooks, and Junior Kelly’s “Woman” gives the set a smoother, roots-minded turn.

The lineup reads like a snapshot of the era’s crossover dancehall strength. Chaka Demus, still carrying the weight of his long run in Jamaican music, pulls things into crowd-pleasing territory on “Gimme Vibes. ” Frisco Kid, Kiprich, Harry Toddler, Future Troubles, Black Rat and the Bling Dog and Notch combination all add their own local styles, from street chatter to fast-chat swagger. “Renegade” works because it leaves room for all of that, moving from tough talk to party heat without losing its shape.
