Punch Riddim (2011) – Good Good Productions

Good Good Productions kept Punch Riddim in the raw, confrontational pocket that suited dancehall in 2011. The set came out as a five-track digital EP on November 11, 2011, with the instrumental version sitting alongside four vocal cuts. Good Good, the Montego Bay-based imprint tied to Zum and the Brit Jam circle, had already built a reputation for sharp, club-ready productions and a steady run of modern dancehall releases.

Punch is all taut drum pressure and clipped, aggressive movement, the kind of riddim that leaves plenty of room for deejays to work the space with attitude rather than melody. The title says it all: the beat hits hard, and the songs on top of it follow suit. D’Angel’s “Good Good” brings a playful but direct female energy, while Kibaki’s “Badmine” rides the rhythm with the kind of determined, melodic delivery that has kept him in the dancehall conversation. Kiprich turns “No Chattings” into a warning shot, leaning into his long-running reputation for smart, sly, clash-minded lyrics. Merciless closes the vocal run with “War Criteria, ” and that cut feels especially natural for him, given how deeply his name is tied to sound clash culture and hard-edged dancehall performance.
