Peppa Riddim (2011) – Di Genius Production

Di Genius was in the middle of a productive run when Peppa Riddim dropped in 2011, and the riddim sits comfortably inside the sharper, more radio-minded side of his catalogue. It has that clipped, percussive dancehall snap that gives the singers room to work, but the groove still carries enough bounce for the darker, tougher voices to push against it. The result is a juggling that feels built for the dance and the mixtape at the same time.

The lineup is strong: Chino, Aidonia, Mavado, Elephant Man, Frisco Kid, Assassin, Mr. Easy, Laden, Volcanic, Singing Sweet, and Di Genius himself. Chino’s “Yeah Yeah” and Aidonia’s “Whine Yuh Body” bring the hook-heavy, uptempo side of the set into focus, while Mavado’s “Pepper” adds the kind of steely edge he was known for in that era. Elephant Man is in his element on “No Weapon” and “Look Gyal Hard, ” leaning into the frantic, crowd-moving energy that made him such a reliable riddim voice. Assassin’s “Nothing At All” adds a more pointed, lyrical cut, and Frisco Kid’s “You Set Di Trend” keeps the veteran presence in the mix.

What makes the riddim work is the balance between swagger and melody.
