Pop Style Riddim (2013) – DJ Frass

DJ Frass’ Pop Style Riddim arrived in 2014 under DJ Frass Records, even though it is usually filed with a 2013 tag because the first voicings were already circulating that year. It is one of those modern dancehall juggling cuts that moves with a bright, clipped pulse and a nagging synth figure, giving deejays plenty of room to work the pocket without crowding the groove.

The line-up is anchored by names with real weight in the genre: Assassin, Bugle, Buju Banton, Chase Cross, Elephant Man, Flexxx, G Starr, I-Octane, Ninja Kid, Spragga Benz and Mad Cobra, with “Dis Dem Anyweh” emerging as the tune that travelled furthest on dancehall charts. That matters, because the riddim works best when voiced by artists who know how to ride a lean arrangement with attitude rather than melody alone. Buju brings veteran authority, Spragga keeps the talk-up sharp, and Mad Cobra’s cut has the kind of direct, no-nonsense delivery that made it an early reference point for the project.
