PASS THE KUTCHIE RIDDIM produced by NECESSARY MAYHEM 2012
Pass The Kutchie Overview
In 2012, reggae fans welcomed a new roots riddim that honored the deep traditions of Jamaican music. The riddim’s rich, steady beat and melodic basslines echoed the classic sound of reggae, making it familiar for long-time listeners. At the same time, it brought fresh energy, drawing in a new generation. NECESSARY MAYHEM, the producer behind the project, is known for blending old-school reggae with modern touches. The label, founded by Curtis Lynch, has released many influential tracks in the UK reggae and dancehall scene. NECESSARY MAYHEM’s approach often highlights strong melodies and crisp production, which helped this riddim stand out. Several artists contributed to the project, each adding their own style. Mighty Diamondsmr Williamz And Yellowman teamed up for “Pass The Kouchie,” a song that nods to the classic reggae anthem “Pass the Kouchie” by The Mighty Diamonds. Yellowman is a legendary dancehall artist, famous for his 1980s hit “Zungguzungguguzungguzeng.” Da Grynch brought his voice to “Pass The Kutchie Riddim,” while Franz Job delivered “Special Lover,” adding smooth vocals to the mix. Benny Page And Mr. Williamz worked together on “It Haffi Bun,” a track that blends Benny Page’s electronic influences with Mr. Williamz’s reggae flow. Kassi And Tippa Irie performed “Soon As I Get Home.” Tippa Irie is well known for his 1986 UK chart hit “Hello Darling.” Williamz also appears on “Tommy Ranks.” This dub release quickly became a staple in reggae playlists, and its influence from 2012 can still be felt today.
