Kings of Kings’ Martial Arts Riddim landed in the early-2000s dancehall moment when raw, sound-system-ready juggling still ruled the road. The label behind it was Canadian-based Kings of Kings, the imprint built around producer Cordell “Scatta” Burrell, who was already carving out a serious name with hard-edged, radio-friendly dancehall productions. This one is generally placed in 2001, though the wider Greensleeves Rhythm Album rollout followed in 2002.
The riddim itself has that heavy, clipped, percussive Kings of Kings feel: tense drums, a taut bass line, and a martial, almost combative energy that makes the title feel exact rather than decorative. It is less glossy than some of the bigger crossover rhythms from that period and more built for selector pressure and quick-fire riding in the dance. The concept works because the beat leaves enough space for deejays to attack it, then tightens up with those brash accents that keep the whole thing moving.
Alozade’s “Jamaica” catches the riddim’s braggadocious side, while Capleton turns in two of the project’s anchor cuts with “Fire” alongside Jah Thunder and the tougher solo “Badness. ” Ce’Cile’s “Fool” adds a sharper female voice to a line-up that otherwise leans hard masculine, and Elephant Man’s “Bombing” pushes the tempo feel into full dance-floor mode. Frisco Kid, Harry Toddler, Hollow Point, Jagwa and Kiprich all fit the rhythm’s aggressive frame, but Capleton’s cuts and Alozade’s opener are the ones that best define the project’s identity.
