Maroon Riddim lands in that early-2000s reggae pocket where a lean, drum-heavy groove leaves plenty of room for the singers to do the talking. Down Sound Records kept it tight in 2004 with just four cuts, and the best of the lot is probably Fanton Mojah’s “Hail The King, ” a rootsy chant that was already getting attention around that time. Jah Cure’s “Congo Man” brings a more soulful edge, while Norrisman’s “Every Day” keeps the message grounded and direct. Bongo Herman’s title cut sets the tone with a stripped-back feel rather than anything overly flashy, which suits the whole package. Coming out in 2004, right as Down Sound was building a stronger run of reggae productions, it sits neatly among the label’s tougher, more conscious releases from that period.
