Already by the time Tippa Irie steps into the title cut, Ruff Mi Tuff has that rattling, waist-winding swing Mungo’s Hi Fi were sharpening in the late 2000s. Released on 12 August 2009 as a six-track Scotch Bonnet set, the riddim sits in a sweet spot between UK soundsystem pressure and straight-up dancehall grit, with the bass doing most of the talking. Omar Perry’s “Live In Peace” cools things down just enough before Daddy Freddy and Sister Carol come in with sharper, more commanding turns, while Bongo Chilli keeps the vibe lively on “Nuttin Na Gwaan. ” The sequencing feels deliberate: vocal cuts up front, the instrumental version parked in the middle, then the last stretch used to widen the mood rather than repeat it.
