Lock Down Riddim – DJ Frass Records

DJ Frass Records kept Lock Down Riddim sharp and current in 2020, naming the project for a moment when the world itself was shut in. Andre “DJ Frass” Gordon, the Kingston producer behind the label, had already built a reputation on the kind of dancehall work that travels far beyond Jamaica, with his catalogue including key riddims such as Clearance, Reggae Fest, Netflixxx and Road To Success. This set sits comfortably in that lane: clean, modern, and tuned for juggling, but still with enough grit to feel rooted in the dancehall session.

The riddim runs on a brisk, springy pulse that sits around the 125 BPM mark, with a spare digital bounce and a tense, percussive feel that suits the pandemic-era title. It leaves room for each voice to cut through without crowding the mix. Chip opens things up with “Lock Down, ” bringing a UK rap edge to the project, while Shenseea’s “Good Comfort” adds a slick, melodic lift. Mavado’s “On My Mind” brings the darker, more commanding tone he’s long been known for, and Teejay’s “Moon Light” keeps the energy warm and fluid. The pairing of Moyann and Kranium on “I Got You” adds one of the softer, more melodic moments, with Kranium’s smooth approach balancing Moyann’s newer-school presence.

What makes the release work is the contrast between those voices. DJ Frass gives each cut enough space to land its own mood, and the combination of melodic crooning, patois punch, and streetwise phrasing makes Lock Down Riddim feel like a strong snapshot of dancehall in mid-2020.
