Life Riddim (2011) – Smartkid Records

Smartkid’s Life Riddim leans on lovers-rock sentiment and conscious uplift, which gives the whole set a softer edge than the harder dancehall cuts the label would later become known for. Frisco Kid’s “Love Letter” and Lutan Fyah’s “Youth Of Today” are the tracks that immediately catch the ear, while Bono G, Influential, Linkage Internal and Zamunda keep the theme moving across seven tunes with no wasted space. It was the company’s first real calling card, and you can hear the label still feeling out its identity here: polished enough to travel, but rooted in that early-2010s Jamaican radio and street circuit energy.
