Venom Riddim (2011) – Smartkid Records

Heavy drum-and-bass pressure and a hard, street-facing bounce run through Venom Riddim, the 2011 Smartkid Records set that came at a moment when the label was leaning harder into full-throttle dancehall after the earlier Life project. Sizzla’s “Seh Dem A Badman, ” Junior Reid’s “Public Favorite, ” and Lutan Fyah’s “Nah Screw Face” sit near the front of the pack, while Spragga Benz and Tajji keep the energy clipped and militant. Smartkid later pointed to Venom as the release that really gave the company street credibility, and you can hear why: the cuts are sharp, the hook work is blunt, and the whole thing feels made for sound systems rather than polite listening. It’s one of the key early chapters in the Smartkid catalogue, right where the label found its rougher edge.
